Artists often mask areas on paper where they don’t want paint to go. They can use Burma Liquid Mask, a liquid rubber resist, for this purpose. The Burma Liquid Mask is very thin, which allows for delicate detail work.

The Burma Liquid Mask is tintable, if preferred. Tubes of Tints All are available at most hardware stores and can be used; merely add a drop or two and stir. However most artists prefer the clear product with no tint. The Burma Liquid Mask should not be left on art work for extended periods of time, months for example, as it could sink into the fibres, making it difficult to remove.

If your Burma Liquid Mask starts to thicken, e.g. after sitting in your studio for six or seven months, you can thin it by following these directions:
buy Amex (made with soft water), a common, all purpose household cleaner that contains a small amount of ammonia (3 - 7%). The ammonia smell can be lessened by working with it at arm’s length and/or ventilating well.
add a few to several caps full (use Amex or Burma Liquid Mask cap) to the mask, depending on how thick it has become.
stir. Don’t shake! Shaking causes bubbles and you don’t want that! Amex is available in Canada from store s such as Zellers, Wal-Mart and Hy & Zels. If you need to know U.S.A or UK outlets, please send us an e-mail!...

After a period of usage, the hardened resist (liquid mask) may collect in the heel of brushes, splaying out the tips so that a point is no longer possible. Using a bigger brush will help; the longer hairs keep the mask out of the heel. But the easiest and best way to clean your brushes - forget all solvents! - is just to use dishwasher liquid mixed with an equal amount of water. Always clean brushes immediately after using as it is almost impossible to clean out the mask after it has fully or partially dried. Keep a glass of water handy so that when you’re using the mask and have to stop for several minutes, you can just put the brush in the water. When you’re ready to use the brush again, take it out of the glass of water and then pinch the brush to get rid of the excess water. Now you are ready to dip the brush in the mask and use it again!...
